Health Benefits Of Ginger

Some heroes don't wear capes - ginger is still somewhat underrated as a superfood here in the UK. Like turmeric and cardamom, ginger is part of the Zingiberaceae family and is prized in eastern countries for its aromatic, culinary and medicinal qualities, having been a staple of Chinese medicine for over 5,000 years.

The rhizome – the underground part of the stem often known as ginger root or simply ginger – is the edible part of the plant. In addition to being good for your health, ginger is also delicious, warming and incredibly easy to consume, with many recipes calling for this spice, including curries, soups and stir-fries. Alternatively, drinking ginger is a simple and easy way to add the root to your diet - whether in a smoothie, a steaming cup of tea or kombucha.

1. Enhances digestion

Given its fiery flavor, ginger might not have been at the top of your list of natural cures if you've ever experienced the wrath of an upset stomach. On the other hand, the root can occasionally reduce the symptoms of several common stomach problems, such as nausea, irritable bowel syndrome, and even menstruation pain.

Ginger has specifically been associated with better digestion and gastric emptying, which is the process by which food moves from the stomach into the small intestine. Indigestion, a broad phrase for symptoms ranging from heartburn and bloating to acid reflux, can have slow stomach digestion as a primary reason. The discomfort that is frequently connected to these issues can be reduced by gastric emptying.

Additionally, ginger is a "warming herb" that is said to help relieve constipation by promoting movement through the digestive tract and stimulating the body to produce more heat.

2. Boosts the immune system

With winter getting closer and news of a new common virus on the market, it's time to start taking good care of our immune systems. Ginger, which is packed with powerful antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties as we enter the cold and flu season, can boost your immune system and even assist it in fighting off harmful antigens.

Ginger's many immune-boosting properties are due to gingerol, an active ingredient in the fresh flowering plant. This is primarily due to its capacity to support the equilibrium of free radicals (as well as antioxidants), which are unstable molecules that have the potential to harm healthy cells. Because of this, your immune system can work at its best.

3. Relieves Arthritis Pain

Ginger also has bone-strengthening effects, including relieving arthritis pain through its anti-inflammatory properties. These can rid the body of free radicals that cause the inflammation, pain, and swelling associated with arthritis.

In particular, some researchers believe that ginger's anti-inflammatory properties may make it useful for people with rheumatoid arthritis, a chronic disease that causes joint pain, swelling, and stiffness. To treat this condition, the Arthritis Foundation recommends taking up to 2g of ginger daily in powder or capsule form, or up to four cups of fresh ginger tea. There are many easy-to-take supplements available, some containing as much as 12,000 mg of whole ginger root.
